Today Microsoft (Skype team) announced that starting 7th of July 2015 there will be only version of Skype for Windows left. As you probably aware currently there are two versions - Skype for desktops and Skype for modern Windows (aka metro app). Two versions provides slightly different experience which maay be confusing for users. It was decided to get rid off one.
From 7 July, 2015 you’ll no longer be able to sign into the Skype for modern Windows app.
If you dont' have Skype for desktop it's time to move to it
1. Go to skype.com > Downloads tab > Computer
2. Download the latest version by clicking Get Skype for Windows desktop
3. Sign into Skype

Microsoft letter recieved by users of Skype for modern Windows.

Hello  user,

It looks like you’ve signed into two Skype for Windows apps ‒ Skype for Windows desktop and Skype for modern Windows ‒ on your Windows 8 device.

We’re simplifying your experience down to one app that you can use either with your mouse and keyboard or with touch. Going forward you’ll only need to use the Skype for Windows desktop app. This app has more features to help you stay connected like screen sharing and group video calling. Also, your chat conversations (from the last 30 days) and all your contacts will appear as normal.

Note: From 7 July, 2015 you’ll no longer be able to sign into the Skype for modern Windows app.

This will be confusing for the users who use the other version. There are many people who used to chat or video call using Skype. I hope it will be good if the Microsoft would make changes to fit both the users. I use Skype for Desktop Windows to chat with my students who reaches out me for help in writing thesis. But, I have no idea whether my students will get difficult to reach out me via Skype.
