Desktop Call Recorder 3.7 is available. It asks which languages you speak on calls and recommends a transcription model for them, with two new models that are faster on a normal PC. Webex recordings get the name of the person or meeting, and a muted Teams call stays in one recording. Earlier 3.x versions update automatically.
Call languages and model
Transcription now starts from the languages you speak on calls. Open Settings, Transcription and press Set up languages and model, or use the Improve link at the top of a transcript. The list is ticked in advance from your keyboard layouts and Windows languages. The app recommends the model that covers all of them and suits your PC, and you can pick another.
Whisper models now use the list too: with one language they skip detection, and with several they only choose among them, listening to what each side says, so a wrong language guess is rarer. If you never set it up, nothing changes.
Two new transcription models
Parakeet v3 covers 25 European languages, including Russian and Ukrainian, and SenseVoice covers Chinese, Cantonese and English. Both are faster than the Whisper models on a CPU and need 64-bit Windows. Parakeet v3 is a 456 MB download and SenseVoice 153 MB.
The large-v3-turbo model now downloads as an 834 MB file instead of 1.6 GB, and a copy you already have keeps working. Like before, everything runs on your PC and no audio is uploaded.
Webex recordings get a name
Webex recordings are named after the call window: the other person's name or email address in a call, the meeting's name in a meeting. The name shows in the recordings list and on the contact's lines of the transcript. When the call window shows nothing but "Webex", the recording is called Webex recording, as before.
A muted Teams call stays in one recording
When you mute a headset in the new Microsoft Teams, Teams closes its microphone. The recording now goes on, with your side silent until you unmute, instead of ending and starting a new file. While Teams has its microphone closed, the recording card reads "Recording, muted in Teams".
Recordings follow the call app's devices
A call recording now follows the microphone and speakers the call app uses. A monitor or dock that Windows makes the default output during a call no longer takes the other side out of the recording. Manual recordings stay on the microphone and speakers you chose for them.
A simpler main window
Automatic and manual recording sit in one row, with the devices behind a Devices button, and search, date, apps and sort share one row above the list. Recordings are grouped by day, the player strip is smaller, and the folder link in the corner shows where the recordings are kept.
When Windows has no microphone, the Devices button says No microphone and Start manual recording is disabled. A recording that cannot start now says so instead of looking like it runs.
There are also other small fixes.
The free version transcribes the first 3 minutes of each call. Pro has no limit.
